Nelson Sport Skills: Tennis

By | Copyright Year:2010 | ISBN-13: 9780170179614

The Nelson Sport Skills video podcasts will assist students in Physical Education through using instructional videos to be distributed as video podcasts. There are 12 sports covered, with plans for more. Ideal for use with students in years 7–10.

Each DVD sport includes podcast files (.m4v, .wmv, .qvi and .3gp) and data files. Play these on a portable media device (iPod or mobile phone). Video podcasts are supplied for each competence level: beginner, intermediate and advanced. They are divided into separate chapters for each skill covered. Podcasts are supplied both with and without a voiceover, so you can record your own narrations. Use the instructions in the user manual provided. There are also other podcast file formats for newer PMDs (3pg, .avi). These are not broken into chapters.

It will be distributed as a complete school site licence DVD, with each DVD containing a video podcast for a different sport. Each sport is further broken down into sport-specific
skills and elements. The product is supported by a teacher user manual and tutorials. Scripts for individual module voice-overs by teachers are also included.

Michael Regan teaches Physical Education at Mazenod College. He is a 'digital native' and accomplished sportsman, so is perfectly placed to create these exciting tools for enhancing skills in a variety of sports.

Brad Hutchinson is also a 'digital native', and is in his third year of teaching Physical Education at Heathmont College.

Narrations (for scripts) - General information and teaching points about the sport and the skills required to participate successfully. A document for each competence level. As the level progresses, the information becomes more specific and technical. You can use the narrations to familiarise yourself with an unfamiliar sport before commencing a class. The language is student-friendly, so you can use them as a basis for your own script if you wish to narrate the video files yourself.

Skills sessions/Lesson plans - These activities can be used in your PE classes to initially practise some of the skills featured in the videos. Equipment requirements are listed, and diagrams show how to set up each activity. Lists of potential questions are also included, to test students’ understanding. To edit the Skills sessions, copy and paste the text from the PDF into your own document.

Skills chart (for assessment) - This editable assessment chart of the skills covered in the videos contains space for student names (additional name spaces can be added). Criteria for achieving assessment levels of ‘high’, ‘medium’ and ‘low’ in each skill are also included.

Data projector files (.mov) - These can be played on a data projector on wet weather days. The voiceover for these is for the intermediate competence level only. You can also add your own narration, if you prefer.
