ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Rachel Whan has been teaching Science and Mathematics for over 25 years. She has shared the knowledge and understanding gained through her Veterinary Science degree with students, including ATAR Biology, Chemistry, Human Biology and Mathematics Methods students. She has also been the Head of Science at St Brigid’s College and Holy Cross College. Rachel has used her understanding of the curriculum, alongside her teaching and learning practices, to author textbooks for the MYP, 7 – 10 Science, ATAR Chemistry and ATAR Human Biology.

Dr Silvia Rudmann has been teaching for over 20 years. Firstly, at university and later in public high schools. Her passion for science and gifted education led her to complete her PhD in Biology and the GERRIC certificate in gifted education with the UNSW. She is currently working as a staff member and researcher at Aurora College (selective virtual school) teaching for the remote and rural education initiative. She is the lead author of the award-winning Nelson textbook series: Investigating Science in Focus, and she has developed the new syllabus and resources for the Biology Foundation Course for RMIT Melbourne. She is the digital consultant for the Nelson Science series and the author of Nelson’s Science Learning Progression Framework.

Christopher Huxley has taught Science in NSW schools since 1981. His academic education included applied biology, Earth science, Science education and learning with technology. He is a former Head of the Science Department and Head of eLearning. Chris has experience in curriculum development, syllabus writing and assessment. He particularly likes teaching multidisciplinary Science and is an experienced teacher of Earth and Environmental Science and Physics.

Anne Disney is a Physics and Chemistry teacher at Knox Grammar School, with over 25 years’ experience in the New South Wales Independent and Northern Territory Public Education Systems. She was a member of the ACARA Physics Advisory Group during the development of the most recent National Curriculum and is an experienced author of Chemistry resources. Anne was an examination marker and moderator for both Physics and Chemistry whilst teaching in the NT and has held various educational leadership roles in the NT and NSW.

Jane Wright has been a science educator at tertiary, secondary and upper primary levels for over 35 years. In this distinguished career, Jane has held leadership roles in both schools and state and national Science Teachers Associations. She has always been fascinated by the natural sciences, having completed a BSc Honours and PhD in Cell Biology. Jane has co-authored a number of Biology textbooks for the Australian Curriculum and she continues her volunteer work in not-for-profit organisations, related to science education

Lisa McPherson, a chemistry teacher and research chemist with twenty years teaching and industry experience, Lisa has taught across private and public sector in Queensland and is involved with QCAA senior chemistry assessment. In addition to reviewing and authoring for Cengage Australia, Lisa is an author of senior chemistry and physics content for a renown online platform as well as a presenter for Visible Learning at a national conference. Lisa holds a BSc and MSc in chemistry in addition to her teaching degree

Adam Sloan, a Physics teacher with 30 years’ experience, Adam Sloan has taught extensively in NSW as well as the United Kingdom and New Zealand. He was a Head of Year for much of that time and more recently Assistant Head of Department at Knox Grammar School. An author of Physics resources, Adam has a well-developed appreciation for the secondary science curriculum.

Dr Stephen Zander has taught in SA, NT and WA in both the Government and Independent systems for over 40 years. He has been a head of department and has taught mainly Physics, Earth and Environmental Science. He is a past President of the Australian Science Teachers Association and has been heavily involved in both state and national curriculum developments for science and Physics at senior levels.

Debra Smith is an experienced Chemistry teacher and author. Debra has been Head of Science at a number of Queensland State High Schools and has been involved in writing science curriculum at the local, state and national levels. She has been President and Treasurer of the Australian Science Teachers Association and is a life member of STAQ. Debra has been the recipient of state and national teaching awards including the 2010 Prime Minister’s Prize for Excellence in Science Teaching – Secondary.
