Core literacy program for Middle–Upper Primary

With an emphasis on comprehension, grammar and vocabulary, Nelson Literacy Directions supports students in learning how to use the English language effectively to gain meaning, and confidently create their own texts in a range of modes.

Nelson Literacy Directions provides a wide variety of printed and electronic texts for explicit instruction in written language, oral language, visual literacy and oral literacy. The fine grade levelling featured throughout the program provides scaffolded support for students at different stages of learning, enabling them to build on early literacy learning.

Nelson Literacy Directions and the Australian Curriculum

The planning and writing of some of these texts pre-date the Australian Curriculum but examination of the materials in Nelson Literacy Directions shows that the general capabilities, cross-curriculum priorities and content from the Australian Curriculum are well supported.

Nelson Literacy Directions titles are organised by Arts, Humanities and Sciences. Many Humanities and Sciences titles support content from the Australian Curriculum: History, Geography and Science. The Arts and some of the Humanities titles support current Arts and HSIE curricula in various states and will potentially provide support for the forthcoming Australian Curriculum in these learning areas.

All big books, levelled texts and exemplar cards within Nelson Literacy Directions 3–6 support the Australian Curriculum: English. Some levelled texts and exemplar cards also support other learning areas within the Australian Curriculum.

Each level of Nelson Literacy Directions comprises:

Levelled fiction and non-fiction texts: 144 carefully levelled texts (18 fiction and 18 non-fiction at each NLD level) for guided and independent reading. Fiction texts expose young readers to a variety of text forms and genres. The non-fiction texts are full of fascinating information, a range of visual elements and exemplary models of one of the nine key text types.
Exemplar card kits: six copies of 27 different cards (162 cards) packaged in a beautifully designed storage box. The carefully levelled fiction and non-fiction titles feature a range of text types and text forms for additional guided and independent reading practice.
Non-fiction big books: three big books with IWB CD linked to the Sciences, Humanities and Arts curricula. The IWB software allows students and teachers to work together to examine the texts in more detail. Functionality includes text editing and rewriting. Text structure, language features and design features are highlighted.
Audio Visual Resources DVD: providing multimodal texts linked to the levelled texts, big books or exemplar cards. Features engaging audio-visual clips to support speaking and listening activities.
Interactive Student Activities CDs: providing four activities for each levelled text to support and reinforce practice in comprehension, spelling, vocabulary and writing.
Teacher's Resource Book with BLM CD: teacher notes, lesson plans and BLMs to support guided reading, writing, speaking and listening activities.
