NovaStar is an engaging, research-informed reading series designed to support teachers in developing students' language comprehension, knowledge building and reading for enjoyment.
NovaStar supports the explicit instruction of language comprehension, integrating background knowledge, vocabulary and comprehension strategies.
NovaStar can be used across year levels. As a guide, these first 60 titles have been designed for a middle primary reader (ages 8-10 years old).
Save time with explicit teaching resources
Explicit teaching notes within each NovaStar text will save lesson planning time. Each title includes ideas for developing comprehension strategies, background knowledge, vocabulary and fluency.
Engage students with diverse and relatable content
Humorous graphic novels, relatable fiction characters and fascinating non-fiction texts engage students, fostering a love of reading and a deep curiousity about the world.
Supports structured literacy instruction
Detailed lesson plans follow the gradual release of responsibility model and include learning intentions and success criteria.
Texts address comprehension strategies such as Predicting, Building on Background Knowledge, Inferring, Summarising and Visualising. Teacher Support resources equip teachers to help students apply these skills to broader literacy activities.
NovaStar supports explicit teaching with clearly stated learning objectives and success criteria. Teacher resources provide opportunities for demonstrating, modelling and scaffolding complex literacy skills and knowledge.
NovaStar titles engage and maintain student interest through diverse characters, captivating narratives and artwork, and contemporary and knowledge-rich non-fiction texts.
Both fiction and non-fiction NovaStar titles have links to a wide range of curriculum learning areas, making them a great resource for building knowledge across a variety of topics. NovaStar titles can support students to build new knowledge while using existing knowledge to connect with the text.
