A variety of text types to support reading comprehension across multiple settings

Mostly New Zealand texts have been chosen for New Zealand students to read, with a focus on topics they will find current, relevant and interesting.

Three different types of questions encourage students to respond to the text at different levels 

On the surface questions ask ‘what are the facts?’. These questions are one of the key skill required for success in the Literacy Reading Standard.

Discovering techniques questions focus the student on how a writer has crafted their text.

Search and think questions require students to look at any underlying ideas, to ‘read between the lines’.  These questions help to develop the more sophisticated close reading skills required in Level 1 NCEA English.

Support your students in application and writing to communicate

The Now write section accompanying each text gives students opportunities to practise writing short passages on demand, but with suggestions for content provided.  There are always two options available to give students a choice of topic.
